Basic
Driver Improvement (BDI) - Four Hour Course
Students who have received a
driving violation and elect to complete this course to avoid points, insurance
penalties (in most instances) and /or to retain a “safe driver” status, will
generally elect the “BDI” course. Typically, in order to ensure that a
completion will be acceptable to the Clerk of Court in the county where the
citation (ticket) was issued, the citation recipient (student) must sign an
Affidavit with the Clerk of the Court attesting to their compliance before
completing the course.
The student will be
responsible for making sure they get credit for completing the BDI course.
Traffic Collision Avoidance Course (TCAC) - Four Hour Course
Students
referred to as “TCAC” are persons involved in certain types of traffic crashes
that must attend TCAC/BDI course. Referrals to this course are typically
accompanied by a notification in a form of a letter sent to the driver
licensee’s address on record at the Florida Department of Highway Safety and
Motor Vehicles (DMSMV). The DTA Program for Driver Improvement meets all
requirements for TCAC referrals by the Florida DHSMV.
You will receive
your certificate upon completion of
the course if you bring all necessary data with you (e.g. ticket number).
Court Ordered Students - Four Hour Course
This class is
for the student who did NOT elect to take the traffic school, but rather for
those who are required by the court to take a course.
Students sent
to the course by court order in most instances will be required to remit a copy
of their course completion certificate directly to the applicable court. The
respective Clerks of Court determine the manner in which reporting of
completion information is processed. Regardless, students will be responsible
for making sure they get credit for completing the course.
All B.D.I.
classes are approved b the State of Florida. You will receive your
certificate upon completion of
the course if you bring all necessary data with you (e.g. ticket number), so you can
present it to the county where you received your ticket. This will insure the
points for your ticket do not appear on your driving record.
The benefits of Attending
Traffic School:
No Points are assessed on DHSMV driving record.
Citation cost reduced up to 18%
Retain “Safe Driver” status on your license
No insurance increase per Florida law
Adjudication is withheld/ Your driving record does not show guilty
Ticket holders from out of state are eligible
Take a voluntary Defensive Driving Course and receive up to a 10%
discount on your insurance
Eligibility
If you decide to go to traffic school,
you must notify the
clerk of the court in the county where you received your ticket. Each county
has its own system for traffic school election. Please check the rules with the
county in which you received the citation BEFORE you pay your ticket!
Once you have completed the Florida
online traffic school course, you will need to turn your completion certificate
in to the court. Although we report student completions to the court in many
cases, it is ultimately YOUR responsibility to make sure the court has received
your completion certificate. If the court does not receive proof of course
completion, your driver license may be suspended by DHSMV.
NOTES:
Important
Information about Your Florida Traffic Ticket
Your
automobile insurance premium can go up hundreds of
dollars for just one Florida ticket! Fortunately, if you
receive a Florida traffic ticket, you can keep points
off your license and keep your insurance from increasing
by signing up for traffic school.
This is
possible because Florida law states that if you elect to
attend Florida traffic school for a moving violation and
you did not cause a crash, your insurance company cannot
raise your rate, cancel your policy, or refuse to renew
it (§626.9541, Florida Statutes). Also, by signing up
for Florida online traffic school, you will get to keep
your safe driver status (if you had this before you got
your ticket).
You can elect
to attend Florida traffic school
unless:
- You have
already elected once before within the past calendar
year;
- You have
elected five times within the past 10 years;
- You hold
a Commercial Driver's License (CDL)*;
- You
received a Florida speeding ticket for driving more
than 30 mph over the limit.
*CDL holders
might be able to attend the BDI course for point
dismissal if they get a court order.
